The fading light of day had set the loft afire with golden light.

It was rare someone surprised
“Chloe. You surprised me.”
He held out a hand and she took it, surprised herself when he guided her onto his lap.
“What were you so lost in thought about?”
“Life,” he said simply. One arm wrapped around her while the other reached for a remote to a small stereo. He pressed play and a mixed CD that she remembered burning for him began to play something soft, romantic. They listened to the music and watched the last of the light fade from the sky, enjoying each others company without the need to talk.
Chloe savored each moment.
When she opened her eyes, she saw that his right hand had been thrown over her leg. The man had massive hands, and they were unimaginably strong.
“What about life?” Chloe finally said. The sun was gone. Only a small, dim lamp provided any kind of light for them now.
“Love,” he clarified. “How I’ve missed out on a lot of happiness because I didn’t see what was in front of me.”
Chloe felt a little foolish at the comic gulp that clenched her throat, but she couldn’t help it. Was he talking about her?
Don’t get your hopes up, Chloe thought. He’s probably going to announce his undying love for Lois…or some girl I’ve never met.
There’d been too much in their past, too many times Chloe had hoped, too long she’d waited, for her to really believe they could ever be more than friends, that Clark would ever want her the way he’d wanted Lana.
